Building the Perfect Laptop – Lenovo’s ThinkPad X300

ThinkPad X300

As a subscriber to Business Week I was thrilled when this issue came out. The transparency of showing the guts of the new Lenovo’s ThinkPad X300 was refreshing. If you ever wondered what was inside your lap top – here is your chance to find out (and they show the parts with less than normal geekspeak). Apple’s MacAir is cool too, but I haven’t gotten to see inside it yet.

What do you think about this idea of sharing your engineering on a national mag?

Project Better Place

March 30th, 2008 by Sean Burke

Project Better Place is an intriguing concept…their Mission (which is simple and easy to remember) is to make the world a better place, one electric car at a time. Outside of the fact that this is an ambitious project what I find very curious is how they plan on selling recharging as a subscription-based service.

They are looking at the Total Cost of Ownership of the vehicle, service, fueling (charging)… extremely innovative and a requirement to support the infrastructure that they will have to build (my guess).

I want to get their CEO, Shai Agassi on our CEO Insights show – anyone know him?

March 30th, 2008 by Sean Burke

AAA – Did you know? Are you assuming too much?

March 30th, 2008 by Sean Burke

I had dinner Friday night with John Tomlin, the COO with AAA South. So, I asked him about the services that AAA provides and from then on my mouth dropped (and stayed dropped). Like most of you, I thought that they provided roadside assistance…period.

But I was uninformed… from passport photos to discounts on eye glasses…their services and assistance go way beyond what I have would have ever imagined.

This of course is not my point though. What struck me about this conversation is that I recognized that I might have fallen into a trap. And that trap is of assuming too much. Assuming that people already know what me and my company can do for them.

As leaders/representative of companies, non-profits, etc. we must be disciplined to fight the urge to assume that people know how we can service/help them. We shouldn’t box people and opportunities in by not taking the time to truly understand the needs/wants/interests/etc.

Ask more questions, learn more…seek to understand then be understood. John thanks for unexpectedly bringing this to my attention.

100 miles per gallon or bust!

March 26th, 2008 by Sean Burke

Keep your eyes on this competition and expect more like it to come. Through our neglect and selfishness we have caused damage. The movement to fix this damage started slowly but it is gaining huge momentum. Stay tuned…I hope we have time.

Car makers are already charging batteries, tuning engines, and inflating tires to get ready for DARPA’s Progressive Automotive X Prize contest, which will deliver $10 million to the winner whose car can exceed 100 miles per gallon.

Headphones at Work?

March 26th, 2008 by Sean Burke

More and more people are wearing headphones at work. For knowledge workers, being able to tune out background noise and distractions to zone in on their work has become a popular pursuit.

Many find it rude…I’ve heard that some companies ban them…but for the headie’s, (people who swear by listening to music while working and a term I just made up) it has become a cultural norm.

I like them. I like them a lot. When I need to jam out a ton of emails; transcribe notes from meetings; drown out chatter that surrounds me – listening to my favorite tunes is a great escape.

Yes it is in many ways rude. People will do the wave in front of my face and then “the move” – symbolic gesture that says “please take off your headphones so that I can ask you a question.” I can even see how people will get annoyed by asking questions over the cube only to get no reply (can’t hear with headphones on – right).

But my take on it is – we are here to work. To Git R Done. And ultimately it is the results that we produce and the attitude we bring to the work environment everyday that should be measured. In open seating environments with phones ringing, cube pow-wow’s occurring, and overall distractions – blasting Pearl Jam to increase my personal productivity and work enjoyment is worth it.
